Simple tips to keep your baby’s skin healthy
If you are reading this article, it means that either you’re a parent to a newborn or someone about to have a baby. Skin care for a newborn can be tedious. A baby’s skin seems so beautiful and smooth, yet conceals in fact much fragility. Although a baby’s skin may not look dry or sensitive, it still needs tailored skincare products to be moisturised daily and to get long-lasting protection from birth on.
To make your task easier and keep your baby's skin smooth and healthy,
read the helpful tips below.
1. Don’t bathe too
long or too often
As cute as it is to bathe your newborn, try to avoid doing
it very often. They don’t need baths very often. We are quite lucky to live in
a part of the world where we have clean, plentiful water, but even that water
is not gentle on baby’s skin. Hot water is known to dry out the skin, but there
are minerals present in the water that can remove moisture. Try to limit baby’s
baths to only a couple of times a week, and instead use a soft silk washcloth
or gentle baby wipes like Johnson’s
extra sensitive baby wipes anytime he/she needs a bit of freshening up.
2. Always check the
ingredient labels in baby products
Many people don’t realise that things like diapers and wipes
can cause skin rashes in babies. Have you ever looked at the list of the
ingredients on wipes packages? Many wipes have a bunch of harsh chemicals
listed as the primary ingredients. Use a brand that has less rash-inducing
ingredients like Johnson’s extra sensitive baby wipes which is gentle on baby’s
skin.
3. Moisturise
naturally
If you don’t use harsh soaps on baby’s skin during a bath,
you don’t need to use a lotion on baby’s skin. Human skin has natural oils
which are made to shield skin and keep it sufficiently moisturised. If you find
that baby's skin needs a bit of moisturiser, though, try to stick with
something that is all natural, or as close to it as you can find. You can use
coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil or Johnson baby products on babies’
skin and it does a beautiful job of adding just enough moisture without any
irritation.
