How to Apply Emla Cream Safely and Effectively

Emla cream is a popular anesthetic cream used to numb the skin before medical procedures that may be painful or uncomfortable. This cream contains two active ingredients, lidocaine and prilocaine, which work together to reduce pain and discomfort by blocking nerve signals. However, it's essential to use Emla cream safely and effectively to avoid any unwanted side effects. Here are some guidelines to help you apply Emla cream safely and effectively.

Emla cream

Firstly, before applying Emla cream, make sure that the skin is clean and dry. Clean the area with soap and water and pat it dry gently. Do not scrub the skin or use any other creams or cosmetics before applying Emla, as it may interfere with its effectiveness. Also, make sure to remove any bandages or dressings from the site of the application.

Secondly, apply Emla cream generously to the area you wish to numb. Use a thick layer of cream to ensure that it covers the entire area adequately. Do not rub the cream into the skin or massage it, as this may cause the cream to absorb too quickly, resulting in an inadequate anesthetic effect. Instead, simply spread the cream using a finger or a spatula to cover the entire area evenly.

Thirdly, cover the area with an occlusive dressing after applying Emla cream. The dressing helps to keep the cream in place and to increase its effectiveness. Use a clear plastic wrap or special occlusive dressing provided by your healthcare provider to cover the area, and make sure that it is tight enough to prevent air from getting in, but not so tight that it causes discomfort or skin irritation.

Fourthly, after applying Emla cream 5%, monitor the numbing effect closely. The cream should take at least 30 minutes to work fully, so be patient and wait until the recommended time has passed before the procedure begins. If the skin does not feel numb or the anesthetic effect is not sufficient, you may need to apply another layer of Emla cream and cover it with a fresh occlusive dressing. Ensure that you do not exceed the maximum recommended dose, as this may increase the risk of side effects.

Finally, after the procedure is complete, remove the occlusive dressing and gently clean the area with a mild soap and water. Do not rub the skin vigorously or use any harsh scrubbing agents, as this may cause skin irritation or damage. Remember to dispose of any used dressing, gloves or applicators that have come into contact with Emla cream responsibly. Do not leave Emla cream on the skin for prolonged periods or apply it to open wounds or damaged skin.

As a therapy, use of  Emla cream for premature ejaculation should be administered 15 to 20 minutes before intercourse.

Emla cream provides an effective and safe method of numbing the skin before medical procedures. However, it's essential to follow these guidelines to apply it safely and effectively. Remember to clean and dry the skin, apply a thick layer of cream, cover with an occlusive dressing, monitor the numbing effect closely.
